Act Against Torture along with thousands of others turned out for the April 23rd, 2006 march for immigrant justice, called by the Bay Area Immigrant Rights Coalition.

The theme and focus of this march is deeply bound up with our work. U.S. government practice of torture isn't limited to military prisons: our factsheet - Stop Torture of Immigrants (English) / Alto A La Tortura De Inmigrantes (Español) - provides gruesome detail. And indefinite detention is intolerable, whether at Guantanamo Bay, Bagram AFB (in Afghanistan), or in "federal detention centers" for immigrants inside U.S. borders. The ACLU wrote of the immigration bill under consideration by the U.S. Senate: The government also would be given extraordinary powers to detain non-citizens indefinitely without meaningful review under the Senate bill. This move would potentially place many non-citizens in a legal "black hole" that subjects them to a life sentence after having served a criminal sentence, or, in some cases, without ever having been convicted of a crime.
