Dia di los Muertos - Day of the Dead - is celebrated in San Francisco each year with a parade in the Mission District. This year, the 29th in which the day has been marked in the City, the annual procession began at 24th and Bryant St., and wound through the neighborhood to return to Garfield Park where many individuals, families, and groups had built altars to honor los Muertos. Act Against Torture turned its infamous Guantanamo Cage into an altar in memory of detainees who died in custody, far from home, brutalized by the United States government, and without even the small comfort of the Geneva Conventions (let alone the rule of law). |

A couple of hours before the march, some of us went to Garfield Park to transform our Guantanamo cage into an altar. |
The cage was decorated with orange paper flowers, banners, and photos of detainees who lost their lives to brutal, lawless conditions imposed by the United States government. |
At the same time many others were setting up altars to honor their loved ones. |
Candles decorated with a silhouetted image of the iconic 'shock treatment' photo from Abu Ghraib and other images were set around a table where we distributed invitations for folks to join our campaign to demand repeal of the Military Commissions Act of 2006. |

AAT did not have the only political altar in the park... |

The march was ... ghoulish. |
When the march reached Garfield Park, people circulated among the many altars, acknowledging remembrances and admiring the artists' work. |

Milling about. |

At least a couple of orange-suited ghouls lingered by the AAT cage/altar to explain to others why we were there. |

The night began to wind down after everyone had taken in the many altars. |

The bottom line: Stop torture. Shut down Guantanamo. No more muertos. |
